WATER PROBLEMS

Postby max33e on Sat Jun 10, 2006 6:06 pm

I have two 3 inch oscars in a 20 gallon tank i know its a little small but i am about to move and i will buy a 55 after i do, but in the mean time i need to do something about the water. It is very cloudy i have tested and treated the water for everything i could find have even put a filter with double the capacity on the tank but it just wont clear up. I have been doing 20% water changes every day for a week and it only clears a little right after I would change more at a time but i dont want to hurt my fish PLEASE POST ANY SUGGESTIONS YOU THINK THAT WOULD HELP ME. Besides a new tank cause i already know its undersized i just need a temporary fix so that my oscars dony get sick, before i buy there new home.

WATER PROBLEMS

Very common for new tanks to be cloudy for awhile. Fine particulates from the gravel, a bacterial bloom from released nutrients, etc. If you put in the fish at the same time you set up the tank, you also have the "nitrogen cycle" to contend with. Here's a link to one of our FAQ threads:

I know it says it's about Africans, but the bit on the cycling is applicable to all. Be sure you have ammonia & nitrite test kits on hand.
Good luck, and keep us posted!

how big are the Oscars and 20 gal are definitely too small even for one 3 Oscars will require at least 120 gals. also you mentioned you change the water but do you vacuum the gravel if so how much and cut back on feed only feed them once a day or every other day and only what they can eat in about 3 mins any thing left over remove it from the water

This is an old post, dated in June.. I am sure he has taken the advice given and hopefully by now, has that 55 gal tank.. As he did not come back and post, I hope everything went allright with his current tank at that time period of his post....
