Where the name "Oscar" came from (?)
In 1997 a gentleman named Roger Sleet submitted this explanation of the origin of the name Oscar to my website. Fact or fiction?
As you correctly say the specific name for the Oscar is ocellatus normally pronounced os'-sel-lay'-tus. In the UK it is also pronounced os'-kel-lay-tus. Now say that with a London accent and it becomes Oscar-layd-us. The rest is obvious.
