The Necessary Evils of Wal-Mart

Postby Deepseafisher on Tue Jan 04, 2005 11:46 pm

Ok, so I understand why Wal-Mart tends to be a bad place to buy fish (just go in and look at the tanks). Does anyone have any experience working there? I am putting in an application and they said that they are hiring someone in the pet department. Anyone know if this is going to be a bad idea? (aside from walmart maybe eating my soul or something of the sort). Appreciate the advice.

ive worked for big souless corperstions before. some pointers.

YOU cant change anything about the way things are done. If the tanks are in a real state dont take it on your self to be a one man cleaning army. and dont think its wise to ask your boss to get someone to do it. (again, they dont much like that;) )

best to just do your job, clean the dead fish out the tank, feed and clean when your told to so on so forth.

The job will be ALOT of heavy carrying too, big bags of pet food, dog beds, tank stands, displays so be ready for that.

basically tehyll tell you everything when you get a job there, dont worry about it too much. think about the staff discount (maybe get a filter like a jet engine or something lol :D )

Where'd you work? I would assume that they dont have Wally world in England, but I've never been off of my continent. Got any interesting stories from your days of working without a soul?

Simular to working in the car industry
Leave your scruples at the door at the beggining of each work day, do a really bodgy job,rip people off, tell them anything to make a sale and then pick them up(scruples) on the way out each day.

I have experience with walmart live fish dept. The biggest reason that all the fish are poor quality is the supplier. Almost half of the fish come in Dead on Arival. Most of the set ups have a huge trickle filter with a massive bio wheel and a heated sump that filters all the tanks, cold water has a separate set up. The chemicals they use are stress coat, quick cure and most resently MelaFix. Good luck

Guess I should have said something, but I forgot...o well. The job fell through, and the person who told me there was an opening was completely wrong. Oh, well. Better "luck" next time, right?

Oh well to hell with Wal-Mart. All the times i've been to one if the fish aren't floating around dead, there isn't that good of a veriety. I donno if you've got a Pet Supplies Plus by where you live but when they get the new fish in they've got a really good selection. That's where i bought my auratus, my convict, my oscars, my cat fish and my koi. And i think this is with most fish companies but if the fish dies in 2 weeks you get ur money back. Plus the most you pay for a fish is $9.99 which is parity cheap considering the prices at other fish stores. Me and Dr. Octogan were talking about a realy cool fish store in our location called Living Sea Aquerium. This place has every fish you want! I mean they even have a shark tank!!!

Thats neat. We have a Petco around here, and they are at least better than Wal-Mart. However, I still try to stick with the Local Pet shop for my stuff, as the fish are more reliable, and I'm generally opposed to big business moving in. Plus, the people at my petco know NOTHING about fish. Get this-one guy tried to tell me that the nitrogen cycle consisted of ammonia being turned into to nitrite, and that the only way to get rid of nitrite (which he knew to be the dangerous part of the cycle) was by water changes and amquel. Yeah, I'll stick with the people who know something about fish keeping and are motivated by profit before I'll go to the people who know jack about fish keeping and are motivated by profit. --end rant, lol
At any rate, mega chains are a decent place to get a tank started from, if you know what you're looking for, and don't need any profesional assitance. The stuff is way cheaper there, at any rate.

Cool. The thing i like about the fish store with the shark tank is that the people in there know a lot about fish, I mean ask them anything about the fish you're buying and they know it. It's like serch on the computer!!! That place has got anything from little fish to perhanas(don't know how to spell it!!) to plecos or "sucker fish" as some people like to call them a good three feet!!!(those go for like $100.00 each!! I'd never wist that much on a fish) The thing i like about the Petco by my house is it's got some col Oscars(sweet!!) But i do agree that the poeple there don't know jacksh*t about fish. For an example- me & me bro went in to get some live plants to make our tank look cooler, and we're asking this guy if the fish would up route it or eat it. The guy took like a hour to answer!! Come on buddy this isn't brain sergery!!!!LOL!! I guess he must :slash: too much.:hahaha: Well what can i say?

lol, deep sea fisher, come along way since this post aint ya?

one minute potential wallmart employee next minuite cichlid fish mod.

shame they dont pay the same aint it.

(i know its like 8 months ago or something but)... i used to work at morrisons, its a super market pretty much like asda (think you have asdas in america, they actaully are owned by walmart)

its pretty much the same story, get abuse of everyone cos they all think their the boss. anything the government says is disregarded by the management or we never get told (like health and safty) then when inspections happen its all our fault.

i ended up just walking out one day after they threatened me with a disaplinary... screw that lol

No, we don't have Asdas around here. Never heard of the place. I'd like to get hired at the LFS, theres some knowledgeable people there, and it might be a bit of fun, ya know? But alas, its not happenin in the near future.
