Texas Chichlids Bred, What do I do with the Fry?

Postby leslih on Wed Jun 22, 2005 5:30 pm

Hi
My Texas Cichlids mated for the first time and today I found about 300 fry in the take. They are about 2 days old. First will the parents eat them? They are all I have in a 125 gallon tank right now.
Second, if the parents will eat them can I keep them in a plastic tote with air? I was trying to think of where to put them and thats what I have. Its probably about 25 gallons. Will that work or is that harmful?

How long does it take them to grow into larger fish that could go back into the tank?

Thanks!!!!

Hi, Leslie (?),

Have no experience with Texas', but you can look at my reply to Craig in the Cichlids forum. Maybe something there will be helpful. Cichlids in general are excellent parents. I think Texas are somewhat more aggresive than severums, so hard to guess how that would play out. My thought is that once you've taken them out of the tank, putting them back in would be very risky until they're too large to be eaten.
