TOPAMAX SIDE AFFECTS

Hi. I'm new to posting on this bord but have been reading it for some time now. I have two oscars. Right now they are only 3-4 inches and are in a 20 gallon tank. I know that I need to upgrade but I am not sure what size would be best. I have done a lot of research and there seems to be a lot of conflicting opinions. From your experience, what would you all recommend for 2 oscars? Thanks - Zeus

We got our oscars less than a year ago at about the same size-2 to 3" and kept them in a 29 gallon tank. They are now 8" and they have been in a 75 gallon tank for about a month. I can't see them happy in anything smaller. We have the 2 oscars, a pleco, a cat, a red devil, and 3 convicts. They all seem pretty happy but if the oscars get any bigger I'd be eyeing a 125 tank.

I used to have two tigers about 6" and i had them in a 60 tank before i gave one away due to Porter bulling him and stressin' him out. I wouldn't go with anything smaller than a 55gal or more tank....

I have 1, 3 year old oscar and 2 8 month old oscars a red devil and a dempsey in an 18" x 18" x 6 foot 110 gallon and i think it will be good for about 2 years or so untill the red devil gets as big as the oscars then ill have to buy the ultimate 400 gallon muuhhaa!!

I have a pair of breeding oscars in a 65gallon tank. They are very happy in it. If you plan to try breeding them I really have to recommend 65gallon tank as the minimum. The 55gallon ones seem to be too narrow...more likely they'll get in a fight and eat the eggs if they're in a 50-55gallon than a 65gallon....yes that 10-15gallons really does make a difference.(not if they're gained by a "tall" tank though)

get the 400 gal. then you can swim with them.i have a 120 gal.with 2 oscars and 4 other fish. i like it because i dont have to clean it as much as a smaller tank.

How wide is your 65 gallon? I am hearing/have read that wide is important, but how wide is wide enough? All I plan to have in the tank is the 2 oscars and my pleco. One reason I was considering the 55 gallon is because they run a lot cheaper because they are mass produced. I have found that even a 120 gallon is cheaper than a 75 wide because the 120's are also mass produced. Then again, the wide issue comes up again. I might have to bite the bullet and spend more for a wide tank.

How do you all feed about corner tanks? Is the lack of length an issue? They seem wide enough, but they are not long.

Thanks all! It really helps hearing everyone's opinions and reasons for what they chose. I want to make sure I make the right decision the first time.

400 gallon would be cool, but I don't plan on swimming with them.

How often do you have to clean the 120 gallon? Do you find the lack of width to be an issue? What kind and how many filters are you using? Thanks.

Yep 400 would be nice. I've actually been looking for a 500gallon acrylic with good dimensions and at a good price, yep hard to find

I've seen one before for $500....too bad I missed it but I think it was glass and heck I don't want to carry such a monster. Not sure how wide my 65gallon is but I know that it is bigger than 12" in width, I think it might be 16 or 18"....if I remember I'll measure it tomorrow.(too lazy to go to the garage now...) I think for big fish like oscars you really need a long tank too, like 4feet long or better. I would think that the 120gallon really is bigger in width than the 55gallon right? If so I'd go for 120gallon if it's the same price like a 75gallon.

I have just one oscar, he started in a 25 gal tank, and he grew too large for it....he just looked cramped. So a friend gave me a 75 gal tank for him , now he's 12 inches.

One thing you must remember when youare buying a tank, and I didn't see it mentioned so I will, oscars grow HUGE!! If you have 2, you will need a little more room than if you only had one. I've noticed the "average" size of oscars on this page seems to be about 9 inches. Some are larger, and many will get that way

Mine took about 6 mos to go from 3 inches to 12 inches; I still haven't had him for a year yet! LOL

I find that my 75 gal looks lonely for one fish, but would be perfect for 2 or 3. It's dimensions are 4 ft. long x 21 inches high x 16 inches wide (front to back).

do you guys think that a 55 gal. would be big enough for two Oscars? cause thats what I have and they're still small so I'd like to find out before they start getting cramped in their little twenty gallon.

In my opinion, 55g is too small for 2 adult oscars. The main reason is that it isn't wide enough (only around 12" wide).

I consider a 75g as a bare minimum for two adult oscars...these tanks are typically 18" wide.

If equally fed, a lone oscar in a 75Gallon tank WILL grow FASTER than another oscar in a 50gallon tank.....just take into account the "general" rule....that's why a lot of fish get much bigger in the wild......

Joe, if only!! LOL Jack grew to 10 inches in a 25 gal tank! that's why we took the opportunity to get a larger tank for him. He's grown another 2 inches since we got the 75 gal in late august. LOL I wonder if they put steroids in the feeder fish these days??
