Stocking pond with Oscars

Postby quixoticfinsfan on Wed May 03, 2006 6:14 pm

I recently purchased a home that has an indoor pond aprox 2500 gallons, prior owners had the pond stocked with koi, and while koi are nice, I prefer oscars. I have never heard of a pond stocked with them before and am curious if anyone knows if there are any reasons I couldnt stock this pond with oscars. Any knowledge will be greatly appreciated.

Stocking pond with Oscars

I see no reason it couldn't be done with Oscars. It would IMO be the same as haveing Oscars in a regular aquarium. I am not sure of the current pond filtering system, nor how many Oscars you want, I think you first need to decide on the amount of Oscars, then try and figure out if the filter system can handel it. The biggest issue I guess would be with establishing the nitrogen cycle. Then after that it would be very similar to an aquarium, except on a large scale.
Personally, I prefer to view fish, side on, and not top down, so this is not something I have ever researched, so this information is just my thoughts on how it might work.

Stocking pond with Oscars

hi and welcome, what part of florida do you live in? my mom lives in st pete., and well their neighbors put an o in the out door pond that they had. it live there for a good while but they forgot that o's are tropical fish and do need a heater and the temp droped in the pond and it killed the oscar. they replaced it and an osprey got to it, so if you live near the coast watch out for your birds of prey they seem to love koi ponds. best of luck:D
