I wasn't in good health lately (and neither was the server apparently) so didn't notice the problem quick enough. Sorry for all the downtime!

Admins, in the control panel there is a setting for the max Unix server load, if that is raised it allows forum to function at higher server loads. In reality the server was not really overloaded, some runaway processes were falsely inflating the server 'load'...reboot fixed it.
