Snails?

Postby ConvictKid on Wed Mar 13, 2002 3:28 am

I was just wondering what are the best snails to keep, my tank peramiters are: 79*F, ph-7.1, and my water has a fairly high gh so i'm told(9 dGH), and of course 0 ammonia, 0 nitrates and about 0 nitrites. Thanks ahead of time.

Snails?

Yeah if anyone knows about freshwater snails or sw snails I am wanting to get a few for my tanks. In my convict tank they keep killing plecos so i am thinking of using snails to clean the tank, if they will make it. I am wanting some that dont breed like crazy and overpopulate the tank. I need something that can handle cons and agressive sw fish turbo snail? apple snail for fw?

get a geophagus. it is a S.A. cichlid that gets the same size as cons and they are good at keeping the tank clean they sift through the gravel. i have a geophagus with my cons and he does great. go to http://www.fishprofiles.com/profiles/cichlids/brasiliensis.asp to learn more

The only thing that is bad about the earth eater is that it will grow up to 10 inches which isnt very feasible for most convict tanks since most people keep them in around a 20 or 30 gallon tank. For the Geophagus brasiliensis you would need a tank closer to 55 gal for the min.

yah, i dont really like fishprofiles b/c of some bad typos or misinformation. a more accurate one would be aquariacentral.com

a geophangus will more likely be a tankmate for a severum, oscar or firemouth. although big, like the oscars, they are more peaceful than agressive and would become a large lunch for convicts.

bak to the sub, try apple snails or "mystery" snails.. i dunno if they'll be able to hold against your cons, but give them try

I have tried apple snails, i bought 3 to put in one of my 29's and they were all dead the next day, the shells were shaterd and the meat eaten, i have found that tiger plecos are small and can fit in some tight spaces, so i have 1 in each of my tanks(except my 55). they are $18 a piece where i live so they do come at a big price if they are killed, but so far they are all okay and keeping my tanks clean.

Snails?

Apple/mystery/golden snails are good, well atleast the variety we get here in Australia sold under those 3 names, i have had some with o's, discus, cons, rd's etc and never had them killed,, although keeping them with my yabbies was another story!!
They a great at cleaning up and only lay eggs out of the water making it easy to control there numbers, i have keep them in ph's from 5 up to 8.2 and they have done fine,, although they where not very happy or active in a PH of 5 heheheh. Only problem i have with them is they crawl on the airstones and fill there shells with air making them float quite often. if that happens bury them in the gravel and they should sort them selfs out.
