i have two oscars and an iredecent shark in my 75 gallon tank. I have a great filtration system with bio balls and all that. I used to have two parrot fish as well in the 75 gallon tank but they have recently died for unknown reasons. The parrot fish had some sort of white fungus on them before they died that came and went twice after i had treated it with Binox. the oscars were never affected, now one oscar stays at the top of the tank and one stays at the bottom but will not leave that one side of the tank. the irredecent shark if completely fine. i do not want to lose these fish as i have had them since they were juvi's.

if any one could lead me in the right direction as to what is wrong within my tank that would be great!

I take it U have a wet/dry filter system?? or a canister.. Either one after 2 months needs to be cleaned out. NOW U dont' what to mess with the bio balls but U need to change out the filter media pad in them..

Most fugus/bacterial problems as what the parrots had, comes from bad filter maintenance which in return, fowles the water causing fugus/bacterial problems.. U can clean the tank, vac the gravel weekly, BUT if U do not clean the filter on the tank at the same time, ( NOT required on wet/dry/canister util by monthly) then it just goes bad again in days.. Try keeping the media pad in the filter U are using cleaner montly and see how eveyone does.. As the Oscars are messy eaters, this might be the key to fungus/other problems in your tank..
Oscars are the messyest eating cichlds U can have.. Others are needed to eat under them.. I had a midas who always waited under him and ate good..

Check your NITRATES and see where they are at.. Any over 60ppm will cause problems..

WATER changes are very important too..If U are not removing a certain Amount of at lest 30% , for the fish U have, anything less is going to cause problems.. That is 22.5 gal of water. I try to do 30 gal weekly.. With the Oscars U have, U might want to do that amount and see how they all do in two weeks time.. U can ajust this to the 20 gal weeky if eveyone does not seem to be having problems as NOW, and your nitrates are down to 40ppm.. Less is better with Nitrates but hard to do with the Oscars..

I have 2 75 gal tanks. They get 30 gal WATER changes PLUS the filters (2 400 Emperor's per tank) being cleaned WEEKLY.. IF I do not do this by the 10th day, I see problems with my cichlids..

Oscars do take spells of not eating to just chilling out. Yours might be doing this.. Normal.. Temp has a roll here to. so to cool, 74F (23.5c) and under, will slow them down, to warm, 78F (25.6c) and higher, and they get aggressive and or spawn if U have a pair.. I keep my tanks at 76F. (24c)

i just did a about a 20 percent water change and no both oscars are at the bottom of the tank and one of them has a white has over one of his eyes... you cant even see his eye anymore. please help this situation is not getting any better !

the oscars are now beating each other and the shark up but its not like they stay away from each other the oscars will not leave that one side of the tank and if the shark goes over there they beat him up. in addition one of them has a cloudy eye. i did a water change today and i cleaned the filter before this all even happend which was only a few days ago. some one said this could be ammonia issues but i cant figure out what it is so i have yet to treat it. PLEASE HELP ME !

Do U have a Ammonia test kit?? Liquid is best and it should be a instant one..

DON"T add in anything to treat the tank IF U DONT' KNOW WHAT IS WRONG!!
U can do more damage than help.. TEST the tank water for Ammonia, NITRITE and NITRATES and see what the reading are..
Ammonia and nitrites should be 0ppm.. NITRATES are always in the water but higher than 40ppm is not good.. Water changes keeping the filter cleaned and VACUUMING the substrate WEEKLY is the only way to keep them down..

HOW much of a water change are U doing??? IS it close to 15-20gal?? Cloudy eye could be from an injury with the other oscar.. As U did clean the tank/filter a few days ago.. Your water paramiters, ammonia 0ppm, nitrite 0ppm, NITRATES not above 40ppm, should be in great..

Also check the temperture in the tank. I would keep it at 76F (25.9c) and not higher..
MOVE the shark to another tank or they wil kill it soon IF Not die from their attacks as they are not strong fish to be shocked to much..

Keep the light OFF... this signals to them nite time conditions and calms them down..

ALSO U might have two males OR two females... That could be why they are fussing with each other so much.. DO U know if they are a pair?? Pairs wil fight before they spawn but not to much but mouth hold then they settle down to spawn.. The shark really needs his own tank..

UNTIL U check the ammonia/others, I can not help much.. A divider might be needed temporaly until U can figure this out..

i got a test kit for ammonia levels and they were really high... i bought a back of Imagine Ammonia Reducer and put that in my filter. I also did a 25 percent water change... they have seemed to start moving around a little bit but how long will it take to completely fix this problem?

IS this a new tank?? Ammonia levels are a sign of a new tank that has been running for less than a few weeks..

U need to do 20% water changes at 15gal, every other day to keep them down.. NOW that U have used a Ammonia reducer, U might get a faulse reading.. IT takes about two weeks to get the Ammonia to 0ppm. BUT then U are going to have NITRITES spike up mid way into the Ammonia spike.. This is a normal process of the cycle of a tank.. Both can kill your fish if they are not deluted with water changes..

Feed only ONCE A DAY.. Clean the tank "weekly" as in VAC the gravel and do the filter as normal as the tank cycles..

Do U have AQUARIUM salt in this tank?? Salt helps with NITRITES but not with Ammonia.

This is not a new tank... i have had it for about 6 months now and it just randomly hit... i just checked the ammonia level again and it is still high but the fish seem to be moving around a little bit more and eating now. So i should just keep on the every other day water changes until it goes away? also one of the O"s has that white thing on his eye still and a pretty big cut on his forhead (no idea what its from) is it ok to treat with Binox while this ammonia problem is still present or should i wait til i get the levels down.

Do U vacuum the gravel when U do your WEEKLY water changes??

That gravel is really big and is a waste and food catcher... This could be your problem with the Ammonia being high..
Some ppl dont' even have gravel in their tanks for this reason with larger cichlids/others, but NO one likes a bare tank..

U might want to remove most of the gravel to 1" and see how the Ammonia does.. IF U are not vacuuming this gravel WEEKLY then U are going to have water quailty problems and Ammonia is one of them..

Cloudy eye is a sure sign of something not right.. I see no deco in this tank that can injure his eye, but that hanging branch could have been a cause.. It does not take much for their eyes to get a slight tear or poke from a stiff branch/other.. IF this is all U have in the tank, then that must have caused his sore on his eye.. It looks nice and they like to hang under it, but make sure U have NO strong branches that can cause injury.. U may have to replace it with something else..

HOW high is the Ammonia??

U might want to do at least a 50% water change and REMOVE most of the gravel AFTER U VACUUM It really good.. This might be your problem. Flushing your filter/wet/dry/other with good clean DECHLORED water might be a good Idea to flush out any waste that is causing the problem from the filter..

U can med them after U do the above, I do recommend this: remove the gravel and do the 50% water change..
I had to do this with my Midas and they are doing better.. They only have scattered gravel in their 75 gal tank now.. Their waste was so big and heavy that is sank and stayed in the gravel causing problems within a weeks time. I was doing their tank every 5 days to keep up as now I have 4 big ones in the tank now.. Not easy to keep the big cichlids with to much gravel.. I have 2 Emperor 400 filters on this tank..

The sore does not look infected yet, just skinned over...

That is a big shark.. Your tank looks nice for what I can see. Simple and clean and not cluttered up..

hi i also had an oscar with a cloudy eye, it did come right, it was due to slightly relaxed cleaning system but as soon as i noticed this occuring i did clean, and almost overnight it came right, at the time i checked water quality and it was all in the safe zones??. it was however at the time a new tank setup, but the water changes alone seemed to fix the problem.
