Seperating My Fish??????!

Postby <3Athena on Tue Jan 31, 2006 9:49 pm

Okey,
I have two Oscars and the dominate one(Athena) is beating the other(Sal) VERY bad. It only happans about once a month, but when it does happen Im forced to put in my Fish jail so Athena wont kill Sal. Its been getting worse latly. So Im wondering, can I split them up and put Sal in another tank and also get both fish new friends? (Because I know they have to be in pairs) Or will they be very sad and not interact with there new friend?

OVERALL
-Can I split them up?
- If So will they get along with another fish in the tank?

Thanks, Athena. More folks here to answer you question. It would help us to know a little more about your setup. How big are your fish? What size tank are they in? Do you know about how old they are?

My Tanks is 65 gallons. But its shape is very wierd, its very long so sometimes they race up and down it.
My fish are about 2-3 years old
Athena is a foot to 13 Inches long and Sal it about 10-11 Inches long. There both tigers Oscars but Athena is an Exotic long-finned. <3 I also keep the Temp. Down cool enough so I THOUGHT they wouldnt fight, but they do.

you could always make a make sift divider out of like two pices of plastic and some soft fishing net of some mesh like faberic. been there and done that. worked for awhile and got my two o's to stop rough housing around.

There are a few approaches you could try. First thing might be to re-arrange the tank furniture (rocks, driftwood, etc) to give them the idea that they can each claim a well-defined portion. Might work, might not. Oscars often have their own ideas about whom they get along with. Another approach might be to put them in a bigger tank. Nothing like a little more space to make the roommate less irritating.

You can also try getting some other fish as distraction fish. Silver dollars work also tinfoil barbs other types of cichlids that are not too aggressive. Yes you can seperate them but they might sulk for a while and you would need another 50 gallon tank. Getting a larger tank might work, you can mix and match some of these ideas. Another tank with new fish or bigger tank with new fish or just some new fish. Other people might have other ideas for types of fish that'll work as well as just other ideas.
