Getting them to tango...

second try same as the first

They tried again but what is so strange, when i find the eggs they are never together or on the side of the tank the o's clean there slate and relax. Now don't laugh at me, but last night out of all the eggs i actually saw a couple of tails. so turned up the air filter on high hoping to help the little buggers out even though they had that purplish color to them. But this is what is weird.I do not take drugs just a drink now and then but there was actully ONE small fry trying it's best to get around at the bottom and even had the coloring of the tiger (male)I had to take pics even knowing when i woke this morning it would be gone and now all the other eggs never made it. the o's won't let me clean the tank and act like they are not through. is it ok just to leave the old eggs laying there? OK you can laugh at me now Image

Don't worry, just leave the eggs in there, I assume the "fry" you found that survived was from a previous batch since it had grown enough for you to distinguish color. Can you please describe for me your tank setup? ie what is used for oscars to lay eggs on, what kind of lighting for the tank etc.. and any other fish in there? have gravel in there? and of course if you have powerful filters turn them down the water flow during spawning etc....

they are in a 75 gal all by themselves with a 12 inch air stone. the filter is magnum 350, i have one penguin 1140 powerhead which i just turned down ( i thought i was helping) here in durham i have been to all lps and have not found slates so i took a rock they sell for looks and turn upside down and put in corner of back side that they favor. but they never lay on it. instead they lay in a hole they dug. and on that side of the tank at night instead of turning light off i block lighting. at first i did not want to put to much gravel in like the 55 gal but i have added more than enough. the lighting is made by perfecto, 40 watts. i would send a pic but they are upset with me right now because this morning b-4 reading the post i went to lps and bought more 2 bags of more gravel and another white rock, and as i was trying to clean she finally bite me for the first time. not as hard as tony's fish bit him, but anyway they have a lot of work to do to fit it back the way they like it. i just wished they would talk to me instead of giving me dirty looks! i keep the temp about 80-84......i think next time should be sucessful..fingers crossed! but she hate that rock! and me right now

Ok, well I hope next time it will go better. From what you say, I can't really see anything you're doing wrong. After a while though you will be able to tell when they are about to lay eggs, I've actually video-taped mine spawning. Try and catch them "in the act". Also, in terms of slate, it is very usefull to have them lay eggs on a rock so that you can take the rock out and put the eggs in other tank if you want. I've used a piece of "Tile" before, you know ceramic tile etc. You might want to try that. Also that mag. 350 is also pretty powerful, I'd turn it off if they're about to get down to "business". Guess it depends on how it positioned though. Good luck,
