I just want to make sure it's ok to add salt to a tank with a pleco and a catfish in it.

yeah some people dont like too,but from experience and other peoples as well it dont cause any probs. Just use "kosher" salt with no aditives. Cooking salt is godd or aaquarium salt if you want to spend more.
