Replacement Algae??

Postby Indy on Fri Mar 09, 2007 7:42 am

I have two rather large Plecos in my 120 gal tank.  I am sure there is not enough algae in the tank for both of them and I feel like I am neglecting them.  I there any type of food I can feed them that they will like?

Hi, Indy!  I feed mine pretty much anything that will sink.  Right now I'm using some OSI spirulina wafers.  I've also used wafers by New Life Spectrum and Hikari.  Most plecos are not pure vegetarians -- common plecos are definitely omnivores, so you don't have to get in a rut.  Mine also appreciate sinking cichlid pellets, and will even grab a piece of FD krill, given the chance.  They're chow hounds!

One little word of warning, however -- Plecos are not simply good glass scrubbers, they are also excellent scavengers for those times we get a little overzealous on our feeding. Specifically feeding them may be overfeeding the aquarium. They would eat the algae wafers and leave the bits of flake food (or Oscar spewings). Just a note to be careful! tmbsup
