Can anyone who knows alot about breeding help me please?

Postby eli on Thu Oct 19, 2006 11:11 pm

I have two oscars that I have raised since two inches, it's been a year now and they are about nine inches and 7.5 inches long.  The larger one is a tiger and it has the more rounder fins and smooth head.  The smaller is an albino and it has a slight hump in its head and more pointed fins.  They are in a 75 gallon tank alone with an algea eater.  They were flaring out their gills and lunging at each other, acting weird as far as quiering and digging grooves in the rocks.  Do I have a pair and if so what do I need to do to get them going?

Are they attacking each other or just showing displays and the such? Why I ask is because there is no way to tell male or female, other than looking at their "parts". If they are digging/displaying and not fighting then they are prepairing to spawn, they still seem a bit young but they will get there. IF they are spawning you will have a male/female combo or female/female. if you have 2 females one will play the role of the male but of course no fertilized eggs. Be sure to watch them closely that they aren't seriously hurting one another, because they could be 2 males that are reaching adult hood. If that is the case they will fight and one must be removed.

Good Luck
