Raising Convict fry artificially...

Postby escaped convict on Mon Jun 11, 2001 10:06 pm

Hello Group!

I am raising my convict fry artificially. Something like the Matrix, hehe. I have to because the parents keep eating the eggs or wiggers.

I have a sponge filter and an airstone in the fry tank and I add maroxy. Okay, yesterday the the eggs started to turn to wiggerlers and I wanted to know how long before they become free swimming and I have to start feeding the fry?

Some fry have been trying to swim but end up going in circles. They have no fins to control themselves.

they would be free swimming in about a week or so, some of them are late-blommers so they have a different time thing. feed the lil suckers once they dont have a little egg sac on their stomach, in other words, feed them once they could swim. for food, use either baby brine shrimp, or extremly tiny flake food.
-flake food: mash it up until it becomes like a very very fine powder, might take about 5 mins

-baby brine: best food for fry b/c they grow really fast once they eat it.

Raising Convict fry artificially...

They started swimming lastnight, YES! Six days from egg to free swimming. About 82 degree average temperature.

I moved the fry to a breeder basket and it's hangering in a 20 gallon tank. The small tank was getting very dirty so i moved them to a tank with a good filteration. I think I lost only about 8 fry. This morning the head count is around 80-100 fry. Hard to count them because the move all the time.

I started feeding liquid fry food. I will feed them brineshrimp A.S.A.P.

Now I just have to wait and see who is a striped con and who is a marbled con.

I only wish my Aulonocara Baenschi's and my Frontosa's would start pumping out some fry.

Thanks,

EC
