hello and question

wanted to say heya to everyone, new to fish and this board. enjoying it so far.

Got a 10gal guppy tank for my girls, they love seeing the babies :) 36gal hex tank for 7 assorted angels and a red-tailed shark, wife loves the angels, "Puppies in water" she calls them. The tank for me is a 55gal assorted african cichlid tank.

The tank has ALOT of rock in there for hiding places. 4 red zebras, 5 yellow labs, 4 yellow-finned Acei, 3 blue ahli, and 3 M. johanni. The breeder i got the fish from said with all the rock i have the number of fish is fine.

Question is..... We woke the other morning to find one of the ahli's jaw was swollen. I haven't had a pregnant fish of my own before but it sure looks like it's carrying eggs, it's not eating, just sits there and looks like its chewing on something. talked to the breeder and he said it sure sounds like it's carrying eggs. Then he asked if i liked the blue color on the male, cept neither of the others is showing any blue yet.

I asked if there is any disease that would show a swollen jaw and no eating, he said he couldn't think of one. I asked if they could just be infertile, since the male doesn't appear spawning age. He said she would know if they are infertile and spit them, they would have to be fertile. Asked about cross-breeding in that tank and he said he's never seen those breeds cross-breed in his 30 years experience.

Can electric blue ahli's spawn before showing spawning colors?

I'm not real big on africans but

cept neither of the others is showing any blue yet.
In a mixed tank with somewhat similar fish it may be old enough to breed but not display dominate or breeding colors if it's not the dominate fish in the tank.

3 blue ahli, and 3 M. johanni
Supposedly they can crossbreed. Never kept the species mixed myself.

hello and question

Well, I got one of my questions answered last night. She is definately carrying eggs, came home last night to see her laying then picking them up. Neither of the others is showing any colors. This morning tho, she is still carrying them.

The tank definately belongs to one of the red zebras. He is the bully of the tank, actually seen him break up fights amongst the others. The one ahli I think is the male is darker right now and showing more aggression.

I think I have a mating pair? :)
