have you gotten him into the bigger tank yet? cuz if not then i would say try to keep up on the water changes the best you can, you'd be surprised how quickly your water quality can go down the crapper if you forget to many water changes in a small tank.
although now that you're on top of things it probably wouldn't be disastorus if you do miss one here or there.
and as far as feeding only feed what he can eat in 20 sec, if he eats his fill in that time ok, but you want to limit the food because the less that goes in the less that comes out and the less that comes out the less ammonia and the better the water quality as long as you don't starve them.

Ive had one jewel cichlid in with some adult oscars and they got along ok, but that was in a 300Litre tank.. The thing with jewels though is they can be very territoral and harrass other fish dispite their size.
What brand did you get for the filter?
Still keep them water changes going untill you can get a bigger tank..

a ' chosen powerehead" filter. is it ok to use? as for this little jewel, how should i be getting him used to clean water. his tank was green with no filtration and not feed for about 3 months. can i try putting him straight in my tank, or should i isolate him first to get him healthy, or just through him in the dep end so to speak, coz he would have died anyway. please help.

Yeah that should be ok,,
Persoanlly I would setup a hospital tank acclimatize the fish to the water temp by foating the bag... The process of getting a fish acclimatized to clean or different ph etc, water takes a lot longer than people think (days to a week even) so basically if your going to put it in with the oscar then float his bag for 20 minutes then slowly bit by bit put small amounts of tank water in the bag every 5 minutes for another 20 minutes then use a net to place the fish in the main tank.. Like I said he still wont be acclimatized fully but it wont "totally" shock him.

alright, checking in again, found a bigger tank today: 4 foot by 15" by 15". is this wide and high enough for a full grown oscar and my aquired jewell (doing better by the way) ?
