ammonia test kit

ok well i've been wondering why the ammonia in my new tank has been staying at 8ppm for over a week now so i did some looking online and found that products like Ammo Lock then it will cause test kits using the Nessler method to give false reading but i checked and my ammonia test it uses the Salicylate method so it should give me the correct reading right? just wondering because i've just now noticed the nitrite rise to .25ppm today after over a week, i also recently added some live plants hoping to speed up the ammonia usage but i'm just wondering if i can trust the reading given to me by the test kit because i don't think the ammonia levels should be at 8ppm after over a week with seeded filters.

I tend to agree, I am not even sure any fish would be alive at 8ppm.
Your correct about the ammo readings with some test kits. I wonder if yours is out of date, and thats why the reading seem eronerous.
Try testing some tap water, etc. and see what it reads, or bring a sample to your lfs, and see what they test it at.
