is driftwood usually coated with something? cuz the ones i have arent coated with anything and the wood seems to scrap off in the water

What kind of drift wood is it? Is it a dark heavy wood almost like iron wood or is it just pine that you would find in the rivers around your house?

I use both kinds in my tanks and have never had a problem with it flaking off. I does bleed a little at first and the loose pieces will fall off but that's it.

yea it is like an iron wood. it looks very dark and i have soaked it for a coupple days.

There is no coating and depending on the wood you use. The look will be different in your tank, just be sure to get wood that hasn't been treated with anything, because if so that will leach into your water and possibly kill your fish.

Also be prepared to have your water turn a bit brown as the wood leachs tanin out. This just softens the water, won't hurt a thing but some people think it is unsightly.
