Bad Experiences with AC?

Postby Mark Stone on Thu Jun 30, 2005 11:48 am

My Goldsaums live in a 55. After reading a thread here that talked about using powerheads instead of airstones, I went out and got an AC 301 -- which worked great for about a month, then stopped. I went back to the LFS and they replaced it, and this second AC 301 quit after a couple of weeks! I took it back and replaced it with a Penguin powerhead which seems to be working well - - - Anybody else having problems with Aqua Clear stuff?

Bad Experiences with AC?

:p I never have used Power Heads in any of my tanks.
Call me Old Fashioned but I always like Driving my UG's with Airstones, I know the Air Exchange is minimal at best, But my Surface Agitation comes from my Magnum 350 Canister Filters, which have Bio Wheel Pro 60's Hooked up to them
But you asked if anyone has ever had any trouble with Aqua Clear Stuff, Yes I have, I used to use 2 Aqua Clear 500's on the back of my O's tanks They'd do just fine for A while but even while using their Media, and they promise if they overflowed, it go in the tank, even with more then Regular Maintance they within 2 weeks would back up, Lids come off and then Slowy put water out all over the floor.
After Several times of this with no help from the Mfg as to why this was happening, They were'nt getting Clogged. I changed to my Present setup.
No Problem Since.
But I also know others who have Aqua Clear Equipment with no Problems.
Go Figure:confused:

Just the Luck of the Draw I Guess:D

We had a discussion a couple of months back about using powerheads in non-UGF tanks instead of airstones for surface agitation and to prevent dead spots, primarily to decrease noise. Also, the bubbles "popping" when they reach the surface keep the cover glasses wet, growing algae, and although easy it's a bit of a pain to keep then cleaned off. Now I've switched to a Penguin 1120 instead of the ACs and have no problems at all -- Mark:cool:
