Hi everyone! I recently aquired a 7inch Tiger Oscar... A friend had to move so I inherited " BOB". Bob was a mess when I got him home.. All I had to keep him in in was a 10 gal Octagon tank that my friend gave me to take him home! He had been seperated from a Albino Oscar, and all in all was a very bummed fish.. So I purchased a new 40 gal tank with a huge Penguin Pump/Filtration System.. I also picked out a Female Albino [ 3incher] named "Peaches", for "BOB" and also picked out a fiesty male 2inch red oscar, I call him "Spike". How to tell the difference between sexes? Very easy, even for a novice!! Bob is waiting for Peaches to grow more before he makes his move but lil Spike has no reason to wait[ at least in his mind! ] BOB watches them do their lil dance of Tail slapping, Tail quivering and lip locking and then he moves in to let Spike know that Peaches is Bobs girl.. ;) They get along great even with the size difference...
I'll get some pics soon...

Hi Pisces, and Welcome to the Forum!

I know very little about Oscars, so I don't know how much help I can give you. I do understand that once they start getting territiorial, though, your oscars are going to need something in the neighborhood of a 70 gallon tank (or maybe even better than that) tank. Maybe someone who knows more can help you with that.

That being said, check out the forums! :D Theres a lot of great stuff around, and were glad to have you here.

Thanks for the welcome mat!

Hey thanks for the warm welcome! Yesss, I'll need a 70 gal tank at least!! Actually I may get a 120... Spike is a silly guy who will probably get a lil too aggressive with Bob and Bob will set him straight:broke:... Yes, guys are agressive when there is only one female around..especially if she's blonde! mmmm, reminds me of some humans...For now they sleep together and Bob is patient with the lil guy, but Bob does give him a nip:nono: if he gets too wild with Peaches... I'll probably have to separate them before Spike gets in trouble. They all enjoy their Earthworms especially sized for each plus a few pellets[ I call them Chips ] They sound like their eating rocks with the pellets and usually don't eat many.. Even when they soften they still don't care for the consistency that's like a sponge!
Thanks for the welcome again and if you have ideas or info for me that would be great!:applause:

See you around.

Born a fish...

Postby Pisces on Mon Apr 18, 2005 10:19 am

Hi again! Yes, I've had a pair of mating oscars many years ago.. Had them for 2 years and they grew to 9 inches or so, [never did have the guts to reach in and measure them!![ smile! ] So I've had a lil bit of knowledge but can always learn something new! I've done alot of fishing in my life and my uncle had a sports/Tackle shop in CA and was an Expert fisherman as well as tying flies, etc..I also spent most of my life in Alaska so I've done my share of any type of fishing! Fly fishing is fun[ trout/dolly varden, but my favorite is HALIBUT!!! We also had a Salmon Hatchery in town plus all of the Salmon spawning streams...

I've fished my share of bass...Its so much fun.

In fact, I've always had a love for water...Fishing, Scuba Diving, Aquarium keeping, swimming...something about it is just great.

My first aquarium I ever kept was kind of strange. It had a small bluegill, a small Largemouth bass, and 2 small red-ear sliders. Little did I know that no one of those would fit in the tank. The fish ended up dying, but the turtles were around for a long time.

Yeah, though. Sounds like you've got quite a bit of experience. Its good to know. We won't have to state the obvious for ya in the future, a la

going to need something in the neighborhood of a 70 gallon tank (or maybe even better than that)

See ya on the boards, and don't be scared to ask any questions.
