What do power heads do?

Postby Indy on Tue Mar 29, 2005 10:19 pm

Someone just suggested I put a power head in my tank to help move the water toward the filters and help keep it clean from the Cichlids.

Just what do power heads do? Are they really that helpful?

They increase the flow of water in your tank. Thats it. Its like a mini-water pump that constantly shoots water in your tank. The theory is that with more water flow, less stuff is going to be missed by your filters. An additional bonus is that some fish appreciate the current. Others don't. I don't really have any experience with any of your fish, but I know that some of them can tend to be messy. I suspect it would be a good idea.

I have one in my 46bow front. I got it to increase water circulation since that one side of my tank sat pretty still. My O always loved swimming by it and getting a "free ride". Jacks never bothered w/it. But it helped tremendously in numerous ways...especially since I attached an additional filter to the bottom of it. And yes, the fish you have are extreeeemely messy, so the more circulation and more filtration you have...the better.

Hey there again.
I'm attempting to attach a photo of my powerhead/extra filter so you can see what I mean. Hope this helps.
