water treatments

Postby tug on Wed Mar 16, 2005 1:57 am

I just moved my 120 gal. down stairs and there is no real plumbing (sinks, drains etc.) and I don't want to haul 5 gal. buckets of water up and down the stairs for water changes.

I have my washing machine down stairs and was thinking about putting a "Y" adapter on the water lines and then hooking that to a hose to fill my tank after my water changes.

Can I just add my water treatments straight into the tank and then fill the tank back up? I don't recall if I can do this or not. And do you think if I can I would need to turn off my filters while I fill it?

I need help.....in more ways than one!

I fill my tanks from my washing machine lines.

To make life easier.

I used valved "Y"'s on the hot and cold,so both lines still run to the washing machine (keeps the warden happy and makes it easier on my ears ;) ).
Then I used another valved "Y" to run the hot and cold into one line (hose) that the temperature can be adjusted on to fill my tanks.

Add a $20 whole house water filter and about $5 in connectors and theres no real need to worry about adding water treatments :D

So let me get this straight. If I get a house water filtration unit I no longer need to declor. my tap water? I always thought that untreated tap water kills all benifical bacteria. Does the home filter declor. as well as filter the water?

As far as the "Y" fitting idea, that's great. I didn't even think about my better half. Man is she goin' to love me, she'll think I'm so smart! Thanks a ton for the personal and fish advice Stillearnin!

Correct.

Just check the insert/cartridge when you buy a filter.

Theres a few different types like - some only remove sediment, some remove chemicals and the more expensive ones remove everything.

The chemical removal cartridges are about $12.00 - $20.00 but depending on the brand they'll filter from 2,000 - 20,000 gallon before they need changed. Either type is still cheaper and easier then useing declor.

So what kind of a price tag we talkin' here? What would be the bare minimum of filtration required to remove the nessesary chemicals?Just tryin' to figure out which one is the cheapest that will do the job effectively.
