Salt is used in freshwater fish tank for several reasons.

It is used in the treatment of many types of fish disease's, (Ich for one).
It is also used as a preventive measure in fishkeeping. It helps fish by reducing stress caused due to osmosis. (osmosis is the method fish use to drink) It help in the gill functions in a similar manner. It also adds electrolytes to the water.

As with any thing, there are cons to go with the pros.
For salt while it is benificial, it also adds to the total of disloved solids in the water, which can lead to ph crash's ect if the TDS is not managed properly.
Others argue the benifits of salt, are not really true, the proof's used to back up the claims of salt, are said to be due to other reasons than the added salt.

I use salt in my tanks, providing it is not harmfull to the fish. There are species of fish, who are not salt tolerant.

If you decide to use salt, it must be managed correctly, incorrect useage of salt, can be fatal to fish, salt tollerent species or not.
