Getting them to tango...

Breeding Dempsey's

Postby tug on Sun Feb 20, 2005 1:38 pm

Hi, I'm new to your site but I've enjoyed browsing the last couple of days.
My question is this, I had my 30 gal. set up with 4 baby Dempsey's in it ( the tank has been set up for about 4 months). Recently two of the fish started hanging out alot, and would'nt let the other two out of the corner. I've done alot of research on Dempsey's and feel I have a fair amount of knowlage about the sexing of these fish. The larger of the two is very colorful and long dorsal and anal fins. The smaller one does'nt have as much color has a bit bolderer markings and fins are'nt as long.
So to make a long story short, I removed the smaller two fish in hopes I've finally got a breeding pair their only about 2-3 inches long at this point but are acting like they like each other.
Was I wrong to asume I have a pair at this early stage? Does my discription of the fish help in any way for answers on their sex?

Sorry about the long text (I guess I like to type or something):D

:D HI tug, and welcome to the forum. I have never bred JD's, but one general sign of pairing up is hanging out together. I am going to move this post to the Breeding section. Hopefully someothers with more experence will give you some more info on breeding JD's. No worries about long posts, the more info the better.

Well thanks for the warm welcome Fuzz. I'm not really ready for breeding yet(they still have to move into their new 55 gal.)so I was mainly wondering if I acted to fast in getting rid of the other two. Recently I put an old pot in the tank to see if they would co-habitat in it, and now they don't come out of it except to eat. So I'm feeling a little better about my decision. Still any suggestions on breeding requirements will be very much appreciated.

Hey Tug

Been about week, curious as to how your fish have been acting, still hanging as a pair?
From a size point of view, they can start breeding at around 3" but its more common at 4 inch's for the female.

Hey Fuzzy, what's up!!
Well the update is this, the two are very much in LOVE they never leave each others sides and they swim together all the time. It seems the male follows the female all over the tank (he must have learned that early in his life.... always please the ladies) But enough with the jokes, they both live together very well and I'll bet they'll be even happier in the new 55. I'll make sure to post the results after they get a bit bigger. Currently male is 3" female is 2.5" and growing!

That's a problem I've been having lately, I've tried to post pictures but I can't seem to get it figured out.
When I go in to the options part and try to find my picture file I cant seem to find them and I don't have the file # so I'm kinda stuck. I am a computer WIZ;) but still can't figure it out. Alright I'm kidding about the computer wiz thing I've only had the computer about a month and have no idea what I'm doing.

So if there's anyone out there with some expertise in this area please lend me a hand before the contest is over. I have some very beautiful fish and would love to show you guys so please help. I'm an AOL member does that have anything to do with it?

:D Ok Tug...
Had me confused as h**l.

I am assuming the trouble you are having is not the actuall upload, but finding the file on you own computor, to upload. Is that correct?
Can you open the file on your own computor?
Post back, and let me know, then we wll go from there.

O.k the update is this I got a photo posted, but not the ones I wanted to. I was looking around in my settings and found a picture my wife had printed and then scanned. It was in a different file than the rest of the pictures and that one I found, but still can't find the other file.
So the problem is in me not being able to find my picture file not the upload process. I think I'm getting closer to figuring out this computer but not there yet.
Should I transfer my pictures into a seperate file that I can find?

:rockin: I GOT IT!!!!
After posting my reply I went back in to the photo upload, and like magic they're all there! I have NO idea what I did but now the file just pulls up when I hit the browse button. I must have accessed it when I posted that scanned picture.
Well Fuzz my new friend check out the pics, now mind you I'm no photographer but my fish I feel are beautiful.
