What's going in the tank?
How about an internal filter, the type that sit in the tank?

Or a airpump-driven UGF, depends on what fish you put in there --

But what would be really cool is to build a shelf or cabinet under the counter for a canister, then all you have is the two tubes. Maybe you can set the canister on the floor inside the counter or something like that --

BTW, are you sure the bar will be able to hold the weight of the 40?

It is actually a knee wall , 4 foot tall made out of 2x4's , and i put a nice 2inch thick x16wx45l slab of oak on top and it is already holding a 20 g and a 5 I figure it would hold a half ton or so.
As of fish going in im not to sure i want a cichlid community tank with only small cichlids but still learning about compatabilty issues. Like to have a convict , firemouth,my morph and yellow lab,and a few more . But i here the yellow lab isnt compatable with alot of fish?lab and morph are mean little boogers..
Any help is appreciated. Id like some feedback on stocking the tank plz. I just want bright colorful cichlids that get no bigger than 3 to 5 inches THX Mike...............

:D I hear you, like Mark said then, if you can incorporate the canister, that will be the neatest soloution. As for stocking, firemouths are cool fish. krib's to they nice and small and colourfull. Hannah was looking at some africans that were farily small ones called dwarf auraturs. If you went with firemouths, you could put some tipical community fish in, for the most part the firemouths would just ignore them unless you got a breeding pair.

For a 40 I would think you can use one of Rena's smaller canisters -- I think I remember that the XP3 is rated for a 175 us gallon. Might save you some $$ if you go the canister route - - -
