Hey, about this siphon deali. What is that? I mean what does it do? Does it stay in the tank at all times or what?

Generally a siphon is used to drain water, or with an attachment it is used to clean the gravel, or sub straight. They are usually a plastic food grade hose, with a 3/8 or even 1/2 ID. They are used only during water changes, or cleaning.

This isn't such a crazy question.....

Ive amazed a few people when they saw me siphoning my tanks.

When I first got an aquarium, and I am afraid to think back how many decades ago that was, I never used a siphon hose. I used to just top up the water, as it evaporated. Then like once every two or three months, I would scoop out the gravel, and clean it in a strainer in the sink. I had a tank for a couple years before I met a guy who raised phirana, he told me to get one.....lol.

I think most of us who've been keeping fish ,a while unfortunately remember those days.

I remember pronouncing cichlid as chicklids until I was corrected by a bloke at a pet shop lol. Didnt know what the hell a gravel vac was either once apon a time lol

lol... mine was chiclids (lol, on occasion still is, as do most people in hull actually... go figure)

i used to wash my filter spounges under the bathroom tap, in scalding hot water.

got the things really clean, but looking back, would explain the loss of more sensative fish.

i blame the rapid advancments in the hobby, and places like this for keeping us all abreast are a god send.
