bumble bee gobies

Postby Craig on Fri Sep 03, 2004 5:25 am

hey gang,

i was bored the other day so decided to start up my cat fish tank in the 29 gal. i gave it an over haul, cleaned out all the gravel, planted plants and did a water change, all was well.

i put in 15 neon tetra (as eye candy)
3 peppered corys

and 2 bumble bee gobies.

i asked the woman in the store and she said theyd be fine in a community, will eat flake and are a little territorial but not if theres alot of cover. (and ive got two huge weeds beds in the tank)

in the last new days alot of my neons have died (about 5) and all have have little grey patches on the back, near the fins.

i did some more research and it turns out the goby is infact a carnivore, only eating live food...

now this is going to sound stupid but, is it possible that the 1" gobies are trying to kill the 1" tetras?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers

Short answer is yes. I kept some of these years ago, and except for gambusia, they're the nippiest little ***@**!***s I've seen. Anything that doesn't eat them will be tormented to distraction, if not death.

gobies lasted about 12 hours, really brought my oscar out his shell again, i guess he trusts me after the move again or something eh?

before i caught the gobies they basically wounded all of my neons, basically their all gonna die, they have huge scratchs about half the legth of their body... basically the size of the gobies mouth.

they also took some huge chunks out of my 2 inche cory, looks a real mess, but hes feeding and all should be well

tiny fish really REALLY suck, me thinks a tiny snake head would be cool.

Oh, well! I guess all's well that ends. Good luck with the rest of the fish. Ever try a horse-faced loach? They're pretty neat, and good citizens.
