CichlidFish.com - Fish That Think.

Hi all,

I am new to aquria, and new to this forum. I have just set up 2 tanks (My uncle runs a fish store in Bondi Beach so I get equipment at cost!). One 3ft with 11 malawi cichlids and one 4ft with 2 gorgeous baby albino oscars, they live with 6 baby convicts (the convicts got the tank cycling for me) and one blue peacock and all get along fine for now. I had an electric yellow in there from my malawi tank and it was beating the oscars up so bad!!! Tearing away at their fins!!!! I was so suprised as electric yellows are meant to be very passive non agressive fish and this particular one gets so beaten up in the malawi tank.. but now he's back in the malawi tank.

After reading some of the posts here I have just decided to take all the funky rock work out of the oscar tank. It looks so great, very attractive and many caves for the convicts but many of you have suggested to keep the tank bare for ease of cleaning, so I will do so.. sadly but I agree.

Look...you don't have to remove all your rocks, caves, plants, etc. The reason people chose to do so is because of time & convience. Us Americans are lazy. Bottom line. Everyone in the world knows that. It's just a way of getting around labor. We hate having to spend more than the required time that it takes to do an adequate job. If it fancies ya mate, go ahead and leave all the decor in the tank. You just might have to spend a little more time each week when you do water changes and clean your tank. That's all. The overall health of the fish depends on it. Other than that, if you wanna take the easy way out(and less maintanence) remove most of the stuff in the tank if you don't like it. Remember...you can always add or remove stuff in your tank. I do it all the time. Gives my fish a sense of exploration and diversity. Good luck & hey...throw another shrimp on the barbie for me...

Cool, thanks for the reply. Well, in any case I have decided to take out most of the rockwork and man! Those convicts were pooing all over the place behind the rockwork! So yes. I see how it would have been nearly impossible for that guck to be cleaned up unless I took the rockwork out each week!!!

And we don't throw shrimps on the barbie!!! We throw prawns on it!!! hehe

Prawns? As of the genus palaemonetes? Are these similar to shrimp but only larger?

Was nice to see yo on chat last night, sorry I didn't get a chance to chat more, bye the way I will be on chat again tonight at 6PM, unfortunately i think that is way early in the morning for you Australians? 10AM GMT that is....and yea actually some Africans are supposed to be pretty aggressive, I'd stay away from the hutus tribe
