My tank is turning green plz HELP!

Postby paw42 on Wed Jul 28, 2004 10:34 pm

hey everyone i am new to oscars and i have one albino, one tiger, and one that im not exactly sure what he is, all in a 20 gallon tank. first off i was just wondreing if this was too small? Second i have had my tank for about a week now and the first few days the water was just fine. but then i put two medium sized rocks, and a piece of wood that i bought. i figured just putting them into the tank wasnt going to be good enough so i washed them and soaked them in a bucket of water. then i put them in and everything was fine for about a day or two, but then the next day my water has started turning green. i dont think its algae because its notrealy collecting on the rocks or wood or even the sides of the tank. plzplzplz help me any segestions are welcome. thanks a lot!!!

sigh, where to begin.

1. your tank is WAY WAY WAY to small for even one full grow oscar, let alone 3. sorry

2. have you even cycled your tank before adding the fish?

3. green waters not a huge problem unless the tank really starts to smell bad. its normally due to free floating forms of algae, like in ponds. make sure the tank isnt in direct sunlight, and try adding barley to the water to reove the green.(the algae isnt growing on the rocks as trhe light isnt getting through the green)

4. do you have a filter, air supply and lighting supply in the tank??

another option to stop green water is to put green perspex (see thru green stuff) all over the tank, this out all the light down o just gren light and stops all plant growth.

yes, its a good deal, however youll need a stand, and an upgrade on all the equipment, so expect it to cost alot more then it first seems.

its irrelivent that the Oscars arent fully grown, they grow about 1 " a month so theyll soon be out grown and killing each other.

you didnt actually answer any of the questions

Is your tank in any direct sunlight?

Mine was and the water would go green in a matter of a few days after a water change. Since moving it across the room and out of any direct sunlight at all I've had no problems.

Hope this helps on the "green" issue.
