Disaster for Father

Postby FatherNSon on Mon Jun 07, 2004 5:58 pm

since my father bought his tank, his male has been trying to court the female angel that he has in his tank, it has been rough at times but most of the time he was ok with her, he did make a few marks on her but my father began mistaking these marks.

He had a closer inspection of her about a week ago andthought there were parasites in the bruises and cuts and such so he bought some anti crustacean parasite medication and began medicating the tank - and this is where it all goes wrong.

After a week my dad noticed the female was accumulating air bubbles on her fins and such, my dad put this down to stress and removed the male altum angel and has placed it in with my oscars, as of yesterday the female dumerilii has gone blind.

My father tasted the water and it was so acidic it has burnt her eyes and slime off so much she is in a bad state.

he has basically done a 100% water change, he knows this is bad but i think and he thinks this is the lesser of two evils, swimming in acid, or swimming in new water without any chlorine.

As of about 5 minutes ago one of his tetra's has died and the outlook for everything within the tank is not really good, we have removed his pleco into my community tank cause it has been stressing the blind dumerilii too much.

Only time will tell now, but i think my father is going to euthanese the female angel to ease her suffering and move the tetra's elsewhere.

By the way my father looks now, it would seem he is about ready to give up fish keeping a second time.

I feel really sorry for him cause all he says is that he has never wanted to hurt a fish.

sorry to hear

hey dude, sorry to hear about the bad news.

my dad gave up fish keping about a month before i got my first tank a few years back, i was too young to understand but its a shame.

if he does give it all up im sure hell still help you keep your tanks. (plus he migh give you his stuff for your own devices)

i always found that chemicals are never good in a tank, causes more damage then good. if you catch the illness early on then its ok but in the later stages (normally when we see it) its too late.

i recently lost alot of fish to a parasite in my koi pond. i found the best way was to sever the links with the fish and just put them out of their missery, it seems barbaric but its for the greater good of the pond/ tank.

at least i saved some of my koi and my better tench.

good luck with the problem dude

Disaster for Father

Postby FatherNSon on Sat Jul 03, 2004 5:49 pm

my dad decided against quitting the hobby and has come back to what he loves hardcore cichlids :)

Yes, angels are cichlids but they aren't cichlids as we know them as in waring all the time with other cichlids and such, so my dad got the female angel back to full health and sold her on with the male and has now acquired 3 green terrors, a male and female convict, and a male and female jadeeye.

amazingly it isnt really war, the female jadeeye is actually being courted by the male convict, would be quite funny to see that happen, first cross breeding of a jadeeye and a convict? lol :)

anyway my dad is much happier now and is lvoing his new found cichliddome :)

Hooray for father :)

ive seen a couple of your posts now where your having trouble with some of your fish and i think if u eased up on the fish content of your tanks u might have a bit more success...just a thought?.....;)
