Egg Crate Dividers

Postby Barb Okla on Sat Jun 19, 2004 2:47 pm

Ok all, I have gotten a request on what and how to make an Egg Crate Divider. This is not recommended for small size fish as they will get through the slats. But great for bigger fish and your tank can circulate if you have Bio-wheel filters. These are 2x4 ft. ventilation grates. (IE.commercial suspended plastic ceiling part) you can find them in home depot's at the back with ceiling tiles. Measure the inside of your tank, and the height, We made ours to go right under the rim at the top, with no gravel under the bottom. Cut to the nearest fit with a whole bar on sides and bottom/top. We then made sure they fit in the tank, but did not force them as they have RAW EDGES and will scatch the glass! We took 5/8 ID clear thin wall vinyl tubing and cut to fit down the sides, then length split the tubing and fit to the sides and using Cable ties, put it on the OUt side of the Crate with the fasteners head on the inside. (see photos) You want a snug fit on the tubing. You may have to take off the top hood to install, you still will have to go parallel to get it in. Remember you have to remove the gravel out from beneth it to get it to fit under the top rim, then move the graveil back to anchor the bottom. It should be a snugg fit.

Egg Crate Dividers

Well, I would love to take the credit for MAKING this but My Hubby did the work! And the Egg Create, as it is called, made 1 for a 125 gal, and 2 for 55 gals. So you can have quite a few dividers from one sheet of Egg Crate. And also I have 4-55gal. I have noticed they are different in widths inside. i have one that fits perfect, and in another 55 it won't. So if you have more than one tank, measure and keep track of which goes where.

Egg Crate Dividers

about the same thing I use - cheaper and stronger then LFS dividers.

another thing that can be done, especially if you have large aggressive fish. Is instead of useing hose - use a section of PVC - cut a groove in the pvc to hold the egg crate (like barb did with the hose) then drill holes (sizes will vary) on the back side of the PVC to hold suction cups.Still make it fit tight,so you end up with a double strength divider.

Just gives it a little stronger frame and suction cups for a little extra stability. overkill on alot of fish but the stronger the better for some large aggressive fish
