Getting them to tango...

Should I?

I currently have a male convict cichlid about 3 inches big in a fish bowl all by itself. I know you all might think I'm crazy, but I've never had a nice big filtrated tank for this cichlid, but it's been with me for the past year. What a survivor. I'm sort of interested in breeding a few fries (I'll have to put the little fries into my other filtrated tank where my other non-agressive fish are unless they're agressive at young age as well??). But would it be dangerous for both cichlids if I put a female convict cichlid in the fish bowl? If so, how about if I put the couple in a 1 gallon filtrated tank? Thanks.

I can't believe that you have had that convict in that jar for that long! Do your self a favor and get a 10 gal, A 29 gal would be best. set it up. A stong dresser will surport either tank. Use 1/3 to 1/2 of the water and gravel from the first tank to establish the tank fast. in 24 hours, put in the convict and a female. You will need caves, You will have a better chance at spwning and raising fry. Please don't attemp to do that in a jar!! It's like you being locked in a closet till you are an adult! Be responsible..

Well, then I guess I shouldn't attempt to breed my convict. I can't really afford to have a huge tank because I need to move around a lot (college dorms...:o ) Thanks anyway. I actually have him in a slightly bigger fish bowl right now. He's survived for a year, so I dno't think he'll just suddenly die. ;)

Your Convict can live by his self quite well. if you can and have extra $$ a five gal all in one would be a good choice for you. But no female. I have 2, 29 gal with con fry right now. at 50-200 per tank. So you are not missing anything important, trust me!! Seems you have keep him alive for a year in a fish Bowl is remarkable. So that means you have done a GREAT Job! :)
