oscar breeding age/size

Postby kscollinsx3 on Thu May 20, 2004 1:44 am

Hi all!
I have 2 tiger oscars that are about 3.5 inched long. They had some tank mates and once they were removed with in half an hour these two were in a serious lip lock/tug of war and it continued for 20-30 minutes. one of them even looked as though it was bleeding a little(no damage done). and nothing since about 2 weeks,
They are very happy, healthy, well feed fish.
What is the basic breeding age for oscars?
Should I even be worried about breeding at this stage?
I have not provided any of the nessesary requirement as I have read here as in a piece of slate and optimal temps but I also don't want to deny them this if it's what they need.
any info is appreciated.
Thanks,
Sabina

They dont normally actually breed untill around 9 inches in length. They do however show all the signs of pairing up and breeding like activity well before 9 inches. It could only be territorial battles and not actual breeding ritual. I guess the age would be around 8 months, but at your size, I don't think you will have any egg laying for a few more months....so you have a while to get the tank in shape for them.
