Ok, Now the Midas are nesting and had to redue the 125 gal to make sure everyone has a place. Got a egg create and cut to fit. split pieces of clear tubing for the sides against the glass. nice fit.
So we will have some 300-5000 nice Midas Fry in 5-6 days! What a deal!

And More Fry!

Postby Barb Okla on Sat Jan 17, 2004 12:49 am

Hey Stillearnin, All they are doing is moving the gravel, about 30 times a day. I have removed (Carefuly, he attacts me) the plants and some large rock that he couldn't move out of the way. they are down to the bottom of the tank and are still moving the rock around to different piles. I have some huge rocks in there in an L shape hoping she would lay on that but so far no. have been watching for aggression on his part but he only nuges her. So is this a waiting game or do I need to do a water change and up the temp or remove her to the other side for some R and R??

my rd's seem to spawn right after water changes so it might help you.I've given up on getting them to lay in a specific spot (like large rocks or slate),the pretty much do what you described- everytime I look in the tank the rocks are somewhere else,it's like haveing a picture of a mountain range that constanly changes.

One thing that seems to be working reasonably well for me though is clay (I think it's actually tera cota - the cheap homedepot kind ;) ) flowerpots (on their side).I have one pair that moves the pot but now only spawns in it,my other two pairs are useing the pots about 80% of the time (they move the pots at will before spawning also).

Not sure what temp your useing but 82's working for me.

If they're getting along I wouldn't remove either - I tried a few times over the years to breed both rd's and midas with NO luck because I couldn't get them to live together (until I restarted with babies this time) at least your that far.

Ok, I new you had experience with these breeders, such picky nesters, thought about a flower pot, but changed to large rocks instead. I needed to know to NOT do anything but maybe up the temp. We got Diatoms to run on the tanks. Wow! talk about a difference! Ok I will let everyone be and just hope for the best. Thanks.

Ok, today is egg day, I went and bought 2 flower clay pots and they have decided to get busy and lay. it's taken all day and I had to put a towel on the out side of tank to get HER to lay. They don't want anyone watching. So I have the Egg crate and it has holes, I really want the fry to get eaten and maybe keep at lest a 50 or so. Sounds cruel but 500-3000 eggs hatched would take my 125 gal to house, and that tank is full. Thinking about ANOTHER 55 gal. with a double stand to hold 2-55gal.tanks. By April one of the other 55 gal will be free. Yep Stellearnin, I need more tanks!!

WE have wigglers! and mom and dad Midas are busy moving the little wigglers to the other clay pot. Put in a plain plexi glass to cover the egg crate so the little wigglers can have a decent chance at life! And got 2-55 gal today to set up! Yep, got more tanks!! O yea, the convicts layed yesterday. Maybe this time they will not eat the eggs. What a DEAL!!

Thats what you get when you put your fingers into places they don't belong!! :o I have been lucky with daddy Midas, I use a net to keep him at bay or I'd probley miss a finger or two!! Have lots of wigglers, Now I know why they are called that. Wiggle wiggle!! Hubby got 2 more 55 gal tanks and they will be set up by the weekend. My puter in down so I have'nt been around to update and chat. My albino Oscar died sat. and my male white goldfish had to be put down. :( And Tiger Is worse... What a deal. :( :(

It's been a week and the fry are everywhere keeping mom and dad totally tuckered out. Dad is the main care giver it seems. Mom just gets the strays. Named a few but keep getting them confused with the others. (just kidding ;) ) about 400 or so.

Ok now the Midas's have the 125 gal tank ALL TO THEM SELVES! The hubby watched some stray fry go to the other side and said: HOLY COW they are on the other side! Get a net!! So I got a net and we gathered them back up and I faned the patition to get the others away from the divider and the hungry fish that wanted fresh meat. The new 55 gal tanks were up and going, so I put the OTHERS in those, because disturbing mom and dad with the fry might make them abandon them. (hubby says) Lordy, their are about 300 or so and I'm feeding them 4 x daily. Abandon them!? Well to make a long story short. They will be switched around in a week or so. Till then. Oh Yea, FREE Midas Fry!!!!

Well folks, was feeding the first batch of Midas fry when i knowest dad was watching me, From the bottom of the top tank through a pit he had dug in the gravel to see what I was doing. Now please tell me that this FISH New his kids were below him and found a way to watch them! As long as I leave the top open on the fry tank He will stay their and watch his first bunch of fry!
Now if thats not a smart fish, I'll eat fish food!!! Well Maybe.. ;)
