Red tailed catfish?????

Postby pitbulldy73 on Sun Jan 04, 2004 10:41 pm

My boyfriend brought home a red tailed catfish. He's over a foot long and is now living in my oscar tank ,125 gal. Have any of you ever owned one of these? What are the best places for accurate information on them? The places I've found so far said that they are nick named tank busters (for a reason), is this true? What is the best advice you can give me to make this guy's life a happy one?
Thanks
Heather

 get a LOT bigger tank - and don't keep it with anything small enough to fit in it's mouth

Thanks for the info. I guess I can now go tell my bf that his $90 investment is going to cost him:mad: Maybee next time he'll listen to me when I tell him to look into things before he buys them.;) That would be part of the reason I have so many questions to ask. He thinks simply , fish , water ,ok. If you know what I mean. Hopefully this will be a lesson well learned.
Thanks again

OMG!! Heee Heee!! I hope he never sees that or we'll end up with a bunch of 600 gal fish tanks filled with catfish. I'm already busy enough around here taking care of tanks (that were supposed to be his). Heck we just remodled our whole den around the first batch of Oscars , we built a bar around the tank. Brings a whole new meaning to wet bar:p .
Now with the monster tank we'll need for this guy I don't know if I'll even have time to train my dogs (one weight puller one soon to be agillity). Heck with as big as that thing can get I might have to feed the dogs to it.

All kiddind aside what should I be feeding other then the other fishes food that he seems to beat the two Oscars to (yes my oscars are big). Will he do fine with goldfish and crayfish for food?
Along with my Oscar pellets and pleco tabs:) . I recently saw a huge pleco that was fed zuchini would he eat that as well? What I mean is what does he need to eat not what will he eat. Keep in mind I live in Wisconsin and it is winter time here so some live food is hard to get.
