I just started really looking into setting up my own domain/website.Now that I think all shipping options are figured out and settled.

Not really sure what I should be looking for though


Anyone have any advice like how much it should cost,how much space I should get,any specific type of host better then another ? Any "special" options I need ?


If it matters, I'm basically just looking to just get my own domain to set up some sales type stuff,and maybe a webcam,nothing like a forum or anything that takes to much computer skills for me no special email accounts or anything like that either.

I checked into this stuff at a local small computer shop and I think that guy was nutts! Typical salesmen though I needed this that and whatever he could think of.He lost me when he tried explaining (coning is what it sounded like to me) all the junk I needed .

well, prices really vary from like $20/year to $40/year registration fee. All of my domains are registered with register.com
It's not the cheapest but you get to use their "DNS" nameservers which is definitely a very useful thing. Hosting goes for about 7 or $10/month for small site on a server that hosts "many" other websites.(you get a couple Gigs of transfer per month.)

$7.95 a month with a free domain name if you sign up for a year ,800mbs of space,40gig bandwidth,3 mysql databases and heaps more. You pay it anually(2 years is cheaper again)and they offer a 30 day money back refund if your not happy.

Locally I got quoted

$180.00 a year hosting - 600 mbs of space
or $22 a month if paid monthly
$100.00 first time domain registration (thru internic I belive he said) and setup and redirection<-- whatever that is
$25 a yr domain renewal after that
(then the extras I don't understand why/how it works this way?)
$20 month ftp account
$10 month for an on server CGI account
$10 month for them to help me with any technical problems via phone *** additional charges if they went in and fixed something for me***
Optional $15 a month for up to 25 email accounts - pop server/forwarding something or other garbage I don't need


SO around $950 for the first year,that why I said forget it for that, I could buy another computer and enough books to probally figure out how to register and host my own site.

If you want to save money, I can point a domain name to your http://www.cichlidfish.com/webusers/web_pages/stilllearnin/index.html website , basically what I talked about in the Newcomers FAQ forum ie http://www.cichlidfish.com/portal/forums/showthread.php?threadid=3565

So I'd just have to pay that place the $35 per year?
Then my site here people could just go to *http://www.whateverInameIt.com* and it would go to the site I've got here? instead of typeing out http://www.cichlidfish.com/webusers/web_pages/stilllearnin/index.html <-- all that ? lol


If so thats not a bad plan and would probally save me alot of frustration since I've figured out the genisis deal here (for the most part).

Since I (we <-- the boss,shh let her think that ) decided in order to get anymore fish some babies need to move faster and have a definate platform to be sold from ,I just didn't really want to sell a whole lot from my site useing/displaying? cichlidfish.com so people didn't get the wrong idea (for good or bad transactions) on who was selling what.

yea, it would go to your cichlidfish site when they type in your short real domain name. Kind of like I did for http://www.cichliddepot.com ,right now cichliddepot.com moved to his own hosted server but before it was on my server. No need to mention cichlidfish anywhere, like cichliddepot(RYAN)...check out his website, it looked the same way on my server only now it loads faster on the ipowerweb(I think it's ipowerweb) servers.

I'll figure out what I'm going to to soon,thought about setting up something this week but I'm trying to hide some extra funds for the upcoming auction
