How would an oscar deal with tankmates such as brook trout or rock bass? I think they're both beautiful, but hubby won't keep any for me... He says they need cooler water. (Not to mention something about not being allowed to Image ) I think they would be very quick, growing up in the streams and all... Hmmm...
What do ya think?

Humph, I use to have a small large mouth bass in a tank with a bull brim. A bull brim is about the equivilant of an Oscar, kinda. They got along just great at the start, but the bass eventually started to get about the same size as the brim and started to bullie him around. Eventually I had to get rid of them both b/c they were in too small a tank(20 ga). But the time they were together they were in relative harmony.

Yea, I've though of mixing in some largemouth bass with cichlids Image but yea, they generally need cooler water. I think they might do ok though in 72-75F, not sure though, if you try it out enlighten us Image

Yea you right! Jen, tell "hubbie" to bring back the really small one(about 4-5"). Just make sure that he is careful cause if you keep a bass that is under a certain size [and the fish is dead (ad.)]you can get in a lot of trouble for it. But as long as its alive in the live-well I don't really see a problem with it. Just be careful I'm sure he would be pissed if he lost his fishing licence for bring home a "throw back" fish!

We who work with the U.S Fish and Wildlife service frown upon such deviant activities! Considor the fact that wild fish may transfer parasites or diseases to your oscar. If you put a wild fish in your tank you may not ever ever ever return it to the wild because it could introduce non native bacteria, viruses, or parasites into the ecosystem which would cause some very negative large scale genetic shifting of the wild fish populations.Another aspect to considor is the fact that oscars and bass exploit very similar ecological niches and just because they are in a tank does not mean they won't compete.Brook trout also need very cool water compared to oscars.

Take a chill pill sister! As we said it in the earlier logs, we are only exploring the possibilities of having them two together. You know, kinda like an "experiement". She already said that her husband would do no such thing for her.
