Thinking about a pair of Oscars

Postby tythew on Sat Sep 30, 2000 6:48 pm

Hi we have been trying to find some new occupants for our 55 gallon tank. It is currently empty. We have a good fish store here in town and they have both the Red and the Tiger Oscars. Are there any differences we should know about other than their coloring? They were about 2-3 inches. Any hints for getting started up would be appreciated as well.
Thanks,
Karla & Tristan

Hi Karla and Tristan,

Welcome to the oscar-addicts forum Image You can have two oscars for your 55gallon. Do you plan on trying to raise a breeding pair? If so you may want to start of with 6 or so of those 2-3" you wanted. Problem is though, 55gallon is still a tad bit crowded, 65gallon gives a bit better turning room. But anyway, hopefully you would have a "pair" form and you would keep the two and sell or trade back the rest for store credit etc...Where will you keep this tank? TRUTHFULLY, i don't recommend two oscars in your tank in your room unless you have money for POWERFULL filters and Vaccuming Gizmos etc... i mean like 2 350Magnum filters, oen of them run with the Micro-Filter, and the other run with the Carbon etc....it's a mess cleaning otherwise and you'll get water all over etc... and basically it is just a lot of work. You might want to just have a lot more smaller cichlids than just 2 big oscars in there. I don't keep ANYTHING in my oscar tanks except, airstone, heaters, and a piece of slate rock for the eggs. And it's still hard to keep clean etc...now, on the other hand OSCARs are the COOLEST fish! Image

There's albino oscars, red oscars, tiger oscars, and more. Stay away form long-finned ones, otherwise whatever color you like. Don't get all red though and one albino, the kinds usually stick together and stress out the oddball...

Very seldom are REAL albinos sold! The "albinos" in pet stores are not true albinos. Sorry just a pet peeve of mine about correct terminalology, I love my white oscar very much.

Ok, ok....here take a valium :)j/k I'll try to remember next time and make sure to make a point that albino's are NOT albinos :) I'm sure many people can't get any sleep at night over this injustice :)

One thing I have noticed from my oscar, they have a lot of personality! Mine does this thing before I feed him. I make him dance! LOL People say you can teach them to eat out of your hands, but that size hungry mouth is coming no where near these fingers! LOL Image

Hehe, yea but watch out one of these days they may take the hand along with the food :)
I used to like to dangle goldfish for them to jump up for. Got them to jump almost all the way out of the water :)

Jack grabbed my finger once...It didn't hurt, but I don't feed him that way anymore, especially since he's now twice the size!!

Don't worry! When they bite you, feeding them from hand, it means they love you, or it could be..hey turkey, next time more food or you loose the finger!
