Who's breeding what?

Wow, thats a lot of fish you all are breeding. About how many babies do you get out of each pair. And how many different tanks do you have and what size?

I have never thought about breeding any fish, it seems hard enough to get good water for the ones I already have. If my water quality at home was better or gets better I might try it though.

It depends on what your looking to breed ,the anwsers to your questions will be different for different fish.

Some africans - people only get 20-50 fry
Some new world cichlids - people get 100- 1,500 fry
(just some averages)

the fry #'s and breeder sizes - influence how many and what size tanks

B - Red Juwels. Maybe this should be a "P" as the male died a few days ago.

A - Yellow Labs
A - Haplochromis venestus
A - Melanochromis johanii and Melanochromis auratus (will these guys cross breed?)
A - Assorted zebras
A - Oscars
A - Dwarf gouramis

P - Blue tilapia, silver shark, some kind of red catfish, dwarf gouramis, some kind of large mud-dwelling fish (called "ikan bado" by the locals) and plenty of other things as well. OK, so this was on a fish farm in Sumatra, Indonesia. Does that still count?

Who's breeding what?

I realize this is an old post but I thought it would be a good one to get going again...

B- Black Convicts
B- Jack Dempsey
A- Firemouth
A- Aulonacara Usisya

In the future most of my tanks are going to be dedicated to breeding African Cichlids from Lake Victoria but right now I'm stilllearnin' as I just starting breeding this past August when the Convicts in my community cichlid tank decided to mate... Now I'm up to 11 tanks(55/46/40L/29 x 3/20H x 2/10 x 3) and I'm hooked! I've got a 90 Gallon on the way and I'm going to put a 75 on the bottom portion of the stand. That gives me lots of possibilities so I'm looking for suggestions on what to stock those with... Happy Holidays!

Good call fisherman.

P - Red juwel. Market flooded.

B - Labidochromis caeruleus (yellow labs). I've had two batches of these now, from different mothers. The fist batch yielded six healthy fish out of nine fry. I haven't counted the second batch yet -- I've seen two, possibly three, but without taking the tank apart it's way too early to call. The first mum is starting to fill out again, so batch number three could be here by early spring.

A - Nimbochromis venustus (giraffe haps). I'm starting to worry that I have two males, rather than a pair, but they are still at least half a year away from spawning age so I don't know for sure. I'm on the look out for some more fry/young fish but the only ones I can find locally are mixed N. venustsus and N. livingstoni, and are therefore no good for responsible breeding.

A - Neolamprologus brichardi (fairy cichlid). I've got six, of varying ages, which should start breeding by next summer at the latest. Probably much sooner. These are really nasty fish for their size, which probably means they have a good chance of breeding in my big, bad malawi tank, despite the much larger fish in there with them. By rights, they should have been eaten by now, but even the tiniest of the six has survived.

A? - Pseudotroheus zebra. I have a breeding age female, and two males approahing breeding age, but I reckon they are all mutts. My second female should reach breeding age by next summer. I think I'm just going to leave them to it in the 180g malawi and hope that the Nimbochromis venustsus get fat on the fry.

A - kuhli loach. I inherited two of these from a friend and liked them so much I bought ten more! Nine remain after a month's quarantine. They new ones were only matchstick-sized when I bought them but they have fattenend up rapidly with a diet of fish sludge and hikari sinking pellets (loach and catfish)

A? - tiger barb. I've got a 20+ shoal of these viscious animals in a 30 gallon tank, many of which are of breeding age. I think my water is all wrong. An RO unit is on the cards, as are a few more 35 gallon tanks, so I might just have a go. Or, I might feed them, one by one, to the piranhas...

A - Baryancistrus sp. L177 (gold nugget pleco). Ok, I'm entering the realm of fantasy here; Panaqolus L204 (as soon as I get some more candidates); spotted bullnose pleco (Chaest..o..blah..di..blah, or something). I'll just see what happens as I grow them out...

Update:

I bought myself another eight Nimbochromis venustus at the weekend. I'm starting to think that my original two are both female. It's going to take a year and a half before they start breeding, but at least now I'm confident that I have a good mix of male and female.

Today I bought a male bristlenose pleco for my heavily gravid female bristlenose pleco.

Amazingly, they were a breeding pair a few months ago. I bought the female last fall but didn't realise that there was also a male in the tank with her. I was talking to the guy at the LFS for over an hour before we realised... They have spawned together at least once before.

The fish were reunited today and instantly hit it off again :D My one concern is that in the intervening months, the female has grown a little larger than her former mate. Hopefully that won't matter too much.

I'm going to set up a cave for them tomorrow, do a large water change and hopefully just sit back and watch :D :D :D
