I have a tank set up just for African cichlids. Mainly Lake Malawi. The Kennyi, Electric yellows and the socolofi are the most peaceful. The female zebras are very sweet too. The male zebra is much more territorial like any other fish, but he just chases and digs holes. If you don't want too much aggression, stay away from the Auratus. I have 3 females to 1 male just to keep him happy.
Allow atleast 4-5 inches of gravel bed with zebras because they dig deep holes and tunnels throughout the large rock caves. They love to swim in and out of big rocks, lots of tall plants and bushes.
The Mbuna cichlids are the most entertaining fish to watch. Since I put them on the all vegitable diet they require, they really seem to look healthier and brighter. (thank you Junior, Brian, and stilllearnin for making me research this) They come right up to you wagging their tails asking for attention.
Don't put Jeweled cichlids in with these Mbunas. Even though they are African, they have different food requirements and will do better with the American cichlids. You can trust me on that one!
Of all my tanks the Lake Malawi cichlid is my favorite.
