Has anyone had success with using large clay pots for a surface for your O's to breed on or would you suggest sticking with the slate? Anyone drop a line if you have tried this instead :D

Clay Pots?!

Hi Kickstart,

Havn't tried clay pot, but I put a big piece of TILE in which has the same color as Clay pot and about same texture. There was also slate rock in the tank. Well I forgot, I posted pictures of it! You probably saw that the oscars decided to lay the eggs on the slate rock, I think they like the black color, so maybe if you have some black pots?

Thanks for the reply Joe. Yea I think they prefer the darker colors. They just kinda "play" with the pots. Push them around from one side of the tank to the other! I think they think I put them in there for a toy..the 2 tigers...oh well. For there amusement I guess! Just as long as they aren't fighting...later

Hmmm, maybe I should put some "toys" in with my oscars, they don't have much of anything to push around except each other :)

Well I wouldn't use plastic for oscars, they might sue for damages due to the inferior quality but convicts may not even notice what material it's made of they're too busy getting it on all the time :)

hey joe,
32 but i won't admit a day over 21:)lol. i notice you didn't post an age for yourself there kiddo.
i have all kinds of toys for my kid. he'll play with anything, long plastic tubes, the scubbie i clean the tank with, etc. he likes to pull the air tubes off my pumps and carry them around in his mouth. what a goofball:) we put wiffleballs that float in his tank and he likes to jump up and make them hit the glass. have to watch him very carefully when cleaning my tank because he has jumpped out twice. very scary 'cause the first time i was doing a water change and left the room for a good couple of minutes, came back and didn't see him at first. he was floppin on the ground on the side of the tank:( good strong healthy critter, never fazed him. he just started moving rocks today, that's a very good sign 'cause he hasn't been digging in this new tank. you gotta get your kids some toys, they'll make you laugh so hard you'll wet yourself!

Hi Kait,

As far as toys, were you referring to my convict "kids" or the oscars? About age ..hmm well the truth is I wish I was still 19, that's the best age I think. I'm almost twenty five though....O yea, I gave my oscars a ping pong ball they really didn't pay much attention to it, maybe cuz they're a pair and they're too busy making out all the time :)

joe, how are the O's doing with the ball? paying any attention yet:) can't get into a bar at nineteen though:( are convicts friendly and fun? are they as destructive as O's? supprised any of you have plants! kudos to ya'll:) i'm thinking of setting up my 125g tank and want to put a colony of fun fish in it. suggestions? gonna' put gil back in the 80g soon and gonna' sell the 150g and the 50g is for the stupid fish, so i thought i'd set up the 125g with some cool kids but want some that will play well with others, you know. hope your kids like their ball, stay groovy! kait

Hi Kait,

Guess what? My pair just laid eggs yesterday :) Sucks though cuz I missed video taping the egg laying by about 15minutes or so! :( darn it, always wanted them to tell me when they start laying them, i need some advance notice, i'm thinking about Requiring SPAWNING Applications from now on :) nope no attention to ping pong ball, maybe if I put a picture of some oscar-babe on it my male might play with it....I kind of like my convict fry better than red devil fry which are toooo mean and seem to grow slower than convicts also....125gallon hmm nice, would make a nice setup....good luck with finding a mate for Gil...

hey joe,
bummer about you missing the spawning:( it would be nice if they would turn different colors or something so you won't miss out again. so do convicts get along well together? what is their average size and life span? do they live well with other fish? Maybe O's:)?
