undergravel filter

I'm planning on removing the UGF's. Do I have to take down the whole tank? I realize I can't just disconnect them. Is taking apart the tank the only way to remove the system? Can I take an air tube and just siphon out all the junk from under the plates? Could it be that simple?

just pull them out of your gravel it'll cloud the tank pretty bad but just let it settle then use a gravel vac to clean up the mess and do a partial water change.

if you just disconnect it,it'll always leave a space for waste to store :(

I was afraid you would say that. I can't just pull them out. I have built elaborate caves and rock hotels and things. I have put a lot of time into these tanks. Plus the fish themselves have dug tunnels through things. I hate to have to do this. I may wind up just leaving the UGF until it's time to do a major tank cleaning.

Sounds like you are just gonna have to take everything out. By the way, what did your fish dig tunnels through???
