Filtration options and/or volumes

Ok,heres another long not so common question for you guys.
Any oponions would be great, experianced oponions would be real great!

Here's the deal/question I was talking to my local distributer about pump prices and etc.. today, told him what I thought I needed and he said I was "out of my mind" and proceeded to tell me.
1.) Pumps like I wanted would need to run on 240 volt (vs.standard) , so I'd have to rewire my basement again
2.) In a large tank or large multiple tanks with a large volume, you only need to turn the water 2 times per hour

Anyone find that 2x's an hour a little( or lot) low?

I went in looking for (what I think? I need) a pump to run 9 - 90's through a central filter,so I was looking for something that would do like 8,500 - 10,000 G.P.H.
and he said only I needed to pump 1,500 - 1,700 g.p.h.

For the big tank - I'm still attempting to build close to 1,000 gallons I was looking for something around the same 8,500 - 10,000 per hour and he reccomended 1,500-1,700 g.p.h again and said with the evaporation that tank will have ,to run a fresh water drip into my sump to add 20-40 gallons per day and it would be either "just right or over kill"

I was thinking "ok this guys just nuts" but a salesmen trying to save a customer money isn't a common thing :D so I figured I'd check into it a little more

Does anyone think 2X's per hour is low? Or am I just over thinking these bigger tanks?
Like I said any thoughts or input would be great.I'd rather over think or over plan this now then end up with a mess or non-functioning system later.

this is my idea.....i think the bigger the tank...the smaller amount of filtration it needs....cus think of this.....ponds dont have much filtrations....lakes...etc......cus theyre so big and wut goes on biologically in that big of a tank, i dont think would need much GPH....i think for a 1000g, juss do about 3000gph or 4000

OR.....you should try to connect a pond filter =]
