Moving a marine tank

Postby Anneuryzm on Thu Jan 09, 2003 1:34 pm

For some time now I've been debating trying a salt water tank and a few weeks ago I found a very good deal on a complete kit at Pet Smart and I picked it up. However, I never set it up because In 6 months to a year I'll be moving out of my apartment.

My question is, can you move a salt water tank once its set up like you can a freshwater tank? ie putting the cycled water in buckets and refilling it at least half-way at its new home.
Is that out of the question for salt water? I know the fish/water quality are very fragile and the slightest change can set off a snowball effect. But I'm getting an itchy trigger finger and I'm finally confident enough to start without the fear of killing everything in the tank out of ignorance. :D

yes -you can move it the same way. BUT check it once it gets moved before you throw your fish in it,saltwater is more affected by temperature changes when you move a tank then freshwater is.

Alright.. I'm going to start with fish only, but is the same true of a reef tank? Or are corals and all of that pretty much permanant? I was told by someone (whom I know now to be very unknowledgable..) that the entire thing has to be torn down and can't just be put back together.

Corals would be harder to move and they supposedly suffer more everytime you have to move them.
Thats about all I know about corals since I mostly like fish that don't mix well with corals

Yeah I agree with stilllearnin......The corals would be alot harder to move and keep alive than the fish. Set it up and start out with some hardy fish like clownfish, or damsels. Don't get the real expensive fish at first just in case something goes wrong. Also, as was mentioned above the temperature of the water is VERY important with salt tanks. Make sure all the parameters and temp is correct before you add the fish back.
