peat moss

Postby C4 on Thu Mar 28, 2002 7:29 pm

I cannot find a hard water tester anywhere, so I don't know iftheproblem w/ my angels is acctually too hard of water, but I think it is.

The guy at the lfs said to add peatmoss into my filter to natuarally soften the water. Has anyone of you done this? I bought the stuff, but have not added it because it looks like it will just turn tomud and make a huge mess in my tank.

Feed me your knowledge

where did you get the peatmoss? theres garden places that sell it, but i dont know if theres any other sort of peat moss.. how does it look? it should look like regular moss.. not all muddy..

peat moss will lower your Ph and i thinks its better than all that chemical stuff

You should be able to get straight peat moss... it comes in big compacted blocks. If you live anywhere near a home depot you should be able to pick up pure peat moss... definately dont use anything mixed with dirt

my lfs actually told me that it'll cloud your water after you put the peat moss in ur filter, but after a while everything will be clear again. i haven't tried it though, maybe next week coz the PH in my arowana tank is getting hight and higher.

peat moss

Buy one of the big bags (blocks) of peat moss,it's alot more then you need but it's only like $5 a bag,it's finely chopped (looks sort of like dirt) and put some of it in a nylon that'll keep it from flowing through you tank.

The long (moss looking) peat moss is hard to get ahold of but it does work the best I don't know if a place like home depot will order it for you but a nursery will.

Orchid moss (sold in small blocks at places like home depot) will also work it's only like $5 for a small block,it just doesn't work as well as peat moss for some reason.

Spagnum moss works to just as good as peat moss BUT it's expensive!and you have to read it real careful becuase most spagnum is made for decoration and moisture retaineing and is treated with fungisides and other chemicals.

The other options are a chemical like "blackwater extract" or MAYBE clean dead leaves? I'm not sure if dead leaves would work, BUT the main thing with peat moss is it breaks down and adds organic material to water seems like leaves would do the same job naturally I think it would just depend on how fast they would break down on how much they'd actually work.

old post now but...
If you haven't found anything yet..
When I went to a dist.. today I saw that eheim makes hardened peat balls (like bioballs)and peat something (sorry forgot the name but they're little ovals) that you can add to your filter they supposedly don't fall apart or cloud your water either.
They'll probally be about $10-$15 but they should last a long time.
