I just bought a clay pot today as a cave for my tank and I didn't even think about how I was going to cut it in half. I have just tried cutting it in half and it shattered, LOL. How does everyone out there cut their clay pots in half?

I'd reccomend a chisle and a hammer and just take a quick hit right in the middle on the bottom and hope for the best ;-)
But you don't have to break it. you can just tilt it so they can get in or just lay it on it's side.

HAHA, that is just what I thought to do. Just take a hammer and chisel to it carefully. WRONG! That is what made it break into many pieces. Any other ideas besides laying it on its side?

I went to petsmart where they have clay pots perfect for that reason,,,,,,,along with a few other caves. I tried the clay pot from plant store. i ended up trashing it,,I even put in tilted, wished my digital was back from shop so i could show you a pic

Angle grinder with a stone cutting wheel and slowly and gently work a cut. Takes pteince but does work

if you are a patient person you can take a nail or screwdriver etc and score a line about half way down into the pot... then try the hammer and chisel... or if you are extremely patient score all the way through.... another idea would be to take a small masonary bit and drill holes in it kind of perforating the pot so it will break the way you want it to

what i did was take a screwdriver and chip small pieces away starting at the drain hole in the middle. didnt break a pot.

what you do, is get a chisel, and scratch the line where u want it broken, then u repeatedly get the chisel and scratch over the line u made until it makes a indent of about half or more of the thickness of the pot, then, doing bit by bit u gently get a chisel or a smaller divice like screw driver and chisel it in bit by bit section by section evenly, and when it finally cracks u will discover the pot has cracked where u have made the deep scratch.

I have a pot in my tank but I didn't cut it in half, I just put the whole thing in and filled it with gravel so it only looks like theres half in there! But I don't halve to worry about wasting money and time on more pots if they break!!

Just take a chain saw and cut it down the middle for god sake. lol

hacksaws are the most practical way of cutting claypots... i thought this was a well known thing?
