How big are they for that price?? we where talking in Australian dollar to BTW (sorry i forgot to mention that in my post) so half that for us equivelent

Well guys here they are pretty pricey. The juves run at 40$ a peice, and adults at 90-140$. If you go on to aquabid.com under discus you can get a proven pair for sometimes a reasonable price. ( they had to have at least raised up 1 spawn suessfully in order to be a proven pair).

Tony its basically water parimeters and cleanliness that they are overly sensitive to. Al needs to be perfect.

I personally don't have discus, but really want them!
Buuutttt I was reading one of my aquarium books and there was a very useful tip! some of youz might know it already but here goes.

"Another way to reasure discus is to introduce dither fish, such as small tetras to show them that the coast is clear and make them more sure of themselves"

I was thinking bout something like that for my reclousive 2" oscars. obously not tetras with O's but maybe some feisty barbs

Yeh i have a few neons in with my discus,, brings out more but they still freak out when they see someone they dont know,, only prob is the tetra's dont like the low PH that i keep my discus in and die off after a few weeks,, currerntly i have 3 survivors that seem to be pretty resistant to the low PH, but 3 is enough for the discus to come out alot more.

Qserv, about your dithers, why don't you try some rummy-nosed tetras? they are good in ph 5. there are also some kinds of laberinth fish that can stand ph 4! I'm not sure though how aggressive or fiesty the labs are, as they might stress your discus. I would get some rummy nosers or blue rams, not just cuz they make good dithers, but they look really cool!

I will take a look around for some rummy-nosed tetra's, but i have never seen them around the LFS's before,, i have tried a few different varietys of labrinth fish too,, dwarf gourami, pearl gourami,, although they didnt die (except for 2) they barely survive in such low PH.

btw i had blue rams,,, they just seem to always die for no reason on me,,, even in resonable PH,, i just dont know why,,,

We have had a couple of rummy nosed tetras and they never lived more than a week for us, but our ph is very high. But our gourammis live very well in the Oscar tank and the community tank. MGHGrand

rummy nosers have to have excelent water quality. As far as I know, as demanding as discus. as for gourami(s) you could try the chocolate gourami, the do well in 4.5-6 ph but I hear they are rather reclousive... some betta species like "betta coccina" or "betta foerschi" like the 4.5-6 region too. I have no experience with the "parosphromenus deissneri" but it likes ph 4-5! I'm not sure if the gourami(s) will help as some of them are rather wimpy but it may be worth a shot if you can't get any rummy nosers. I used to be as obsessed with the gourami as I am now with Oscars, so I may be able to help with any gourami questions anyone may have

I was just lookin' through one my fish books, and it said that emperor tetra's can go in 5 ph too. I think these are pretty common...I still would go with the rummy nosers(sorry, I just love saying "nosers") as they look really cool.

MrsCommish, I paid $30.00 for a 2" gold nugget pleco and he died! Not sure why, evrything else in the tank was fine. Our lfs has a very large one for $150.00. It's gorgeous! I've had a problem with a med. size pleco sucking on my Arrowana, but I have a small one in now and he leaves the A alone. I'd get the gold nugget and put him in another tank.
