What's the best way to clean plants..

Postby Jimco1822 on Wed Dec 19, 2001 4:19 am

I spent about five hours cleaning as many 24'' plants today,,,, they're plastic with tiny leaves..... the only way I could get them clean, especially at the tops was with an old toothbrush..doing each leaf individually...
Can anyone give me some tips.....???
You can just imagine what my hands looked and felt like....

Thanks Tony,,,

Ill try that, but some of that algae can be pretty stubborn though....

Also, I made the recepie last night,,, used chicken hearts since, good luck trying to find beef hearts here.... fed a small piece this morning and while he didnt attack it he definitely ate it....
I learned years ago from Graham Kerr, not to be a slave to your recepies, so I used chicken hearts and livers, shrimp,, spinach and pees, garlic, and pellets,,
I was surprised it made no mess to speak of..Now my guy is small so he didnt get much of a piece but it stayed whole and while he was eating it it was no worse then a pellet that is starting to soften.
I'm sure I'm going to like using the "Eukanuba" of fish food..

you could try using a highly diluted solution of either hot water and vinegar or bleach... this will help to kill the algea and make it eaier to wash off... if you are using silk plants bleach is probably not the best idea because it will probably leech the color. If they are plastic you might even be able to run them through the dishwasher on the top shelf... but I have never tried this so dont recommend it unless you want to try it Image

Thanks Adam

Actually I was thinking about trying the dishwasher... Just wont let it heat dry as I think that would melt them..
I think I'm going to try it next time,, I'll let them soak in very hot vinigar and water then run them through the dishwasher....
I'll post my results when I do...but there's no way I'm ever going to clean them the way I did yesterday..... they look brand new but no way... never again.

LOL yeah that does sound a bit over kill, let us know how it goes. Adding a pleco can help keep the algea at bay but I'm not sure how much space you have in your tank... some pleco's get huge Image
