Roommate squashs fiddler crab

Postby Hippolyta on Tue Dec 04, 2001 6:35 pm

I was cleaning the crab container this past weekend and I handed the two fiddlers to my roommate who was reading a book on the couch. They were in a yogurt container and she took hers(the male) out to look at it and proceeded to drop it.She thought it was in the couch cushions so she threw the book on the floor and started looking for it. Turns out the poor little guy was in in the book and I heard him go crunch. He is alive and appears to be ok but he has a crack in his upper carapace and I cannot think of anything to seal it with. There is a little crabby smoosh mark in my book but the crab does not appear to be loosing bodily fluids and is acting normally.I was not pleased with my roommate for handling such a little crunchy creature with such a lack of delicacy.Any suggestions?

LOL... sorry not funny I know Image I think on this one you are gonna have to let mother nature take it's course. I cant think of anything that might fix it without being a risk in itself... sorry I couldnt be of more help.

Istead of using stiches on alot of people these days they use a very strong water proof type glue that seals the cut and after it heals it disinigrates on its own. You could call your local human clinic and see if that would be a possiability. Or call your nearest large (as in size, not animals) vet hospitol to see what they reccomend.

Thanks guys, he shouldn't get Saprolegnia because I keep the crab container brackish. He looked fine when I left. I thought about using glue or nail polish as a sealer but I thought those would be too toxic. I am mostly worried about loss of osmotic integrity with the tissues being exposed to the water but I'm not sure how deep the crack is, it may not be that deep even.

Do not use any craft type glue or nail polish, that is very toxic. Image Just watch for fungal infections as stated earlier.

I picked him up the other day and did a little light proding and examination and the crack in the middle of the carapace seems better but he branch extending to the left actually gives when I press on it. Even though the crab didn't exhibit any discomfort when I did that it still worries me.

I came home last night and my roommate informed me that the crab was dead Image
She's saying it isn't her fault and it doesn't matter because it's JUST a crab and it ONLY cost $3.00. That's not the point it was a living thing and all living things matter. I think you should treat all things carefully. Just because it doesn't have a spinr doesn't mean it's disposable. Image
The good news is my female moulted, I think she ate her shell because I can't find it but she is brigher and her two stumpy legs are growing back Image

You may want to visit your local grocery store or pharmacy and purchase some "Absolute Waterproof" Foam Premium Tape. It is made by NEXCARE. BTW...sorry to hear about this mishap. Image
